My story
I'm pushing myself this Easter - not only have I given up chocolate for 6 weeks but I've also committed to walking 200 km to raise money for Cafod.

The withdrawal of U.S. financial aid has significant and far-reaching impacts on poverty, particularly in regions heavily reliant on this support. Here are some key effects:
1. **Increased Poverty Rates**: The reduction in aid can push millions of people into extreme poverty. For instance, experts predict that cuts in U.S. aid could push 5.7 million more Africans into extreme poverty.
2. **Healthcare Disruptions**: Many healthcare programs, especially those targeting HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, face severe disruptions. In South Africa, over 1.1 million people risk losing access to antiretroviral therapy due to funding cuts.
3. **Food Insecurity**: The halt in aid affects food distribution programs, putting millions at risk of hunger. For example, 500,000 metric tons of food are at risk of spoiling due to the USAID stop-work order.
4. **Economic Instability**: The withdrawal of aid can lead to economic instability in recipient countries, affecting local economies and development projects. This can result in reduced economic growth and increased unemployment.
5. **Humanitarian Crises**: In conflict-affected regions like Afghanistan, the reduction in aid hampers humanitarian efforts, leaving millions without access to essential services and support.
These impacts highlight the critical role that U.S. financial aid plays in alleviating poverty and supporting development worldwide. The withdrawal of this aid can have devastating consequences for vulnerable populations.
Your donations can change lives. Every £1 raised through the Big Lent Walk will help fight poverty globally in countries like Afghanistan, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan.
